How to read the inch scale
Each inch is divided into 16 equal parts. The longest intermediate mark is the half-inch, followed by quarter-inch and eighth-inch marks, with the shortest ticks showing sixteenths. This stepped pattern makes common fractions easier to identify at a glance.
Decimal and fractional measurements
Drag across the ruler to see a decimal-inch value. The measurement output also provides a practical sixteenth-inch fraction, useful when matching common tape-measure or hardware dimensions.
Calibrate the screen first
An inch is a physical unit, so an uncalibrated browser cannot guarantee a true one-inch length on every device. Match a standard 85.60 mm bank card or use the known screen diagonal, then keep the same display scale while measuring.
When an inch ruler is useful
- Small hardware, craft pieces and printed parts.
- Checking dimensions given in US customary units.
- Comparing an inch measurement with the metric scale without changing tools.
